I was on sick leave when Det Chief Wilson & Insp. T. Cook called at my home.
They were instructed by Sup. McNiell to obtain statements and exhibits regarding fraud on the Ulster Paper Products. They indicated that a Pete Dalton from Headquarters would take over until I resumed duty. I agreed to have the papers ready for Monday 6th August. When they left Det Sgt Shortt & Constable Cree arrived to have statements completed in respect of Video Cassetts. My health was improving & I felt much better. I was contemplating returning to work but the harassment was not to stop. Even under this constant strain I managed to sort out all documents.
I was not to get the rest period that the Doctor had recommended. Wilson called on the 6th at my home to take me to the office in order to obtain two folders to hand over to Pete Dalton. I sorted out further documents that would be of interest to Dalton. I unfortunately had overloked my locker keys and was unable to get the two folders & exhibits, but I pointed out to Wilson the lockers concerned.
Wilson returned to the main office. Det Sgt Thompson stated that he had been directed by Det Chief I. McNiell to obtain all files under investigation and a summary of all these cases.
Wilson stated to Sgt Thompson that Dalton was taking over all my investigations.
I was given to believe by Wilson that I was going to the office for 2 folders & exhibits, when in fact he lied & decieved me. He wanted the papers of all my investigations & intimated that I would not be coming back to the office. There was no way I was going to be treated in this off-hand fashion any longer, there was no excuse whatsoever for these unwarranted & persistant attacks on me. The limit of my endurance was long past, I refused to dance to their dictates any longer & left to go home. I informed Wilson in the presence of Cooke that he must never set foot near my home.
My nerves were stretched to breaking point and fearing further harassment from Wilson & those directing him I decided to get completely from their reach.
My wife left to go to her fathers leaving me with my two children. My wife not understanding what pressures I was under did not want me to leave, I had to get away. I secured my fire-arm so well that when Wilson on the 7th and onother officer searched my home, they were unable to locate it.
There was no way I was going to get a rest as suggested by my doctor - going away was not to be the break I expected. I was treated like a common criminal. A SX message was circulated to Police Forces, I was reported missing from home & if outside N. Ireland I was unlawfully in possession of a firearm. Who could be the author of these false & malicious messages? If this is what happens to a dedicated officer........
I enjoyed my work & got on well with other officers, but because I dared to speak out against a superior for theft and unlawful possession of a firearm & ammunition - would my superiors have wanted me to remain quiet?
